After overcoming addiction to Xanax and cocaine as a teen, Joy was focused on helping others in her position. For years she spoke at schools and helped to develop programs for other teens dealing with drug and alcohol use. Unfortunately, at the age of 25 she found herself falling back into the grips of addiction after losing access to her support network and entering a toxic marriage. Stressed and without support and guidance, Joy focused all of her attention and energy on being a mother and wife during the day before turning to alcohol during ‘me time’ at night. She eventually relapsed on Xanax as well after being prescribed it once again by the same doctor who initially gave her the drug as a teen. After years of trying to cope on her own, April 19th, 2019 is a day Joy will never forget. At the end of her rope with few options at her disposal, that was the day she made the choice to save her own life. Suicidal and desperate, Joy called her insurance company for help finding an addiction treatment center in Dallas, Texas that could take her in immediately. Joy recalls being overwhelmed by the feeling of safety the moment she entered Discovery Point Retreat. Under the guidance of our compassionate team of clinicians and behavioral health specialists, she rediscovered herself. Now, feeling more like herself than she has in decades, Joy offers nothing but encouragement and love to others who may be in her same shoes.
