Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Dallas, TX
Here at Discovery Point Retreat in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, our partial hospitalization program (or “PHP” for short) is a vital part of our continuum of care. PHP is an outpatient level of care; however, clients receive the same therapies, services and structure as in residential treatment without 24-hour treatment and medical supervision.
The partial hospitalization program traditionally provides an intermediate phase between residential inpatient treatment and intensive outpatient treatment. It’s an option that may also be beneficial for clients who are unable to commit to full inpatient care because of professional, educational or family obligations. Clients in Discovery Point Retreat’s PHP receive approximately six hours of group therapy each day, paired with at least one individual therapy session per week, with evenings and weekends available for rest, sober living routines, and personal recovery work.
Whether you’re making the transition back into society following residential care or are returning for extra support, Discovery Point Retreat is fully prepared to meet you right where you are — and prepare you for the journey ahead. To learn more, call us at 855-245-4127.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A Partial Hospitalization Program, or PHP, is a structured, intensive level of addiction or mental health treatment that provides comprehensive care during the day while allowing individuals to return home or to a sober living environment at night. It is often considered a middle level of care between inpatient (residential) treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
For those new to the recovery journey, it may be necessary to address the physical aspects of addiction through medical detox. At Discovery Point Retreat, detox and residential inpatient care are delivered at our facilities in Ennis and Waxahachie. Once you have completed medical detox and are clinically ready to step down to a less restrictive level of care, our PHP in Dallas offers the same intensity of clinical work as residential, without overnight residency. The Dallas PHP is the bridge between residential care and a sustainable sober life.
However, not all recovery journeys follow a straight line. Relapse and false starts are common, and are nothing to be ashamed of; in fact, they can offer a powerful opportunity to reaffirm your commitment to recovery. For those who have prior experience in recovery or who may need extra support in a moment of vulnerability, it may not be necessary to start over with residential care. Often, a partial hospitalization program can help to get you back on track.
What Does the Partial Hospitalization Program Include?
During a Partial Hospitalization Program, individuals participate in structured, full-day treatment that typically runs five to seven days per week for several hours each day while still returning home or to a sober living environment at night. Each day usually begins with a check-in or clinical assessment where staff review mood, cravings, sleep, medication response, and any immediate risks or stressors.
The core of PHP treatment is therapy delivered in both group and individual formats. Individual therapy sessions often use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help identify and change negative thought patterns, Motivational Interviewing (MI) to strengthen commitment to recovery, and trauma-informed therapy to address past experiences that may contribute to substance use. Group therapy is typically the most time-intensive component and may include process groups, relapse prevention groups, and psychoeducational sessions focused on understanding addiction, triggers, and coping strategies.
Many PHP programs also incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training, which focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Additional services often include psychiatric evaluations, medication management for withdrawal symptoms or co-occurring disorders, and family therapy to improve communication and support systems. Some programs also offer complementary or holistic therapies such as mindfulness meditation, stress management training, yoga, or art therapy to support overall emotional stability.
Discovery Point Retreat’s partial hospitalization program offers the same level of direct care provided during residential inpatient treatment — without requiring overnight residency. Clients participate in group dynamic therapy and individual counseling sessions to address the psychological aspects of addiction. By maintaining a low client-to-staff ratio, we ensure each person gets the care and attention they need for success. PHP program clients also have access to supplemental programs, such as 12 Step addiction recovery and faith-based rehab.

How Long Does PHP Last?
A Partial Hospitalization Program for addiction treatment typically lasts about 2 to 6 weeks on average, though the exact length can vary based on an individual’s clinical needs, progress, and level of stability. Some people may complete PHP in a shorter timeframe if they stabilize quickly and transition to a lower level of care, while others may stay longer if they continue to need intensive daily support.
Goals & Effectiveness of PHP for Addiction Treatment
The main goals of a Partial Hospitalization Program for addiction treatment are to provide intensive structure, stabilize symptoms, and help individuals build the skills needed for long-term recovery without requiring 24-hour inpatient care. PHP focuses on reducing substance use, preventing relapse, and addressing the underlying emotional, behavioral, and mental health factors that contribute to addiction. It also helps individuals develop coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen daily functioning so they can safely transition to a lower level of care like Intensive Outpatient Programs.
PHP is considered highly effective for individuals who need a high level of support but are stable enough to live outside a residential facility. Research and clinical outcomes generally show that structured, evidence-based programs that include therapies, and relapse prevention planning can significantly improve recovery outcomes. Effectiveness is often highest when patients actively participate, complete the recommended duration of treatment, and continue with step-down care after PHP.
PHP works best as part of a continuum of care, serving as a bridge between inpatient treatment and outpatient support while giving individuals the tools, structure, and accountability needed to maintain sobriety in real-world settings.
Signs a PHP is Right for Me
Discovery Point Retreat’s PHP in Dallas is designed for clients who need intensive, structured treatment but who are stable enough to live outside a residential facility. The following are common signs that a PHP level of care may be the right fit for you or a loved one.
- You need intensive daily treatment but do not require 24-hour inpatient supervision
- You are struggling to stay stable in sobriety without a highly structured environment
- You have recently completed detox or inpatient rehab and need continued intensive support
- You are experiencing frequent cravings, triggers, or early relapse warning signs
- Outpatient or IOP treatment has not provided enough structure or accountability
- You are dealing with co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder
- You need daily access to therapy, psychiatric care, or medication management
- You have a safe and stable place to stay outside of treatment hours (home or sober living)
- You are motivated for recovery but need a high level of clinical support to maintain progress
- You are transitioning between inpatient care and outpatient treatment and need a step-down level of structure
Who is Involved in PHP Treatment?
A Partial Hospitalization Program is run by a multidisciplinary treatment team made up of licensed medical and behavioral health professionals who work together to provide structured, intensive care. The program is typically overseen by a psychiatrist or medical director who is responsible for diagnosing conditions, managing medications, and supervising overall treatment planning.
Clinical care is usually provided by licensed therapists or counselors who lead individual therapy, group therapy, and evidence-based treatments. Many PHPs also include addiction counselors who specialize in substance use disorders and relapse prevention support.
Nurses often play an important role in monitoring physical and mental health, administering medications, and checking in on withdrawal symptoms or side effects. Case managers or care coordinators help patients with treatment planning, discharge preparation, and transitions to lower levels of care like Intensive Outpatient Programs.
In some programs, family therapists, peer support specialists, or recovery coaches are also involved to strengthen support systems and help individuals build long-term recovery skills.
PHP Alcohol Rehab and Drug Addiction Programs in Dallas
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is home to a number of outpatient rehab centers, but not all of them offer a true partial hospitalization program for alcohol and drug addiction. Discovery Point Retreat’s Dallas PHP is structured to provide the same clinical intensity as residential treatment during day hours, with the flexibility for clients to return each evening to a stable, sober environment.
For clients who do not have a stable, sober environment at home, the Roots & Summit Program offers structured sober living across the Dallas area, with men’s, women’s, and co-ed homes. PHP clients who live in our sober living homes receive free daily transportation to and from the Dallas outpatient center, removing one of the most common barriers to consistent treatment attendance. Success in PHP requires honesty, accountability, and a strong sober support network. The Roots & Summit Program is built to provide exactly that during the most fragile stage of recovery.
How Is The Partial Hospitalization Program at Discovery Point Different?
The Discovery Point Retreat PHP differs from other rehab facilities in Dallas, and across the country, in several substantial ways:
Joint Commission accreditation. Discovery Point Retreat is licensed and accredited by The Joint Commission, the national authority on healthcare quality and patient safety standards.
A full continuum of care. Discovery Point Retreat operates medical detox and residential inpatient treatment at our facilities in Ennis and Waxahachie, PHP and Intensive Outpatient at our Dallas outpatient center, and the Roots & Summit Program sober living homes in Dallas. Clients move through the appropriate level of care without leaving the Discovery Point Retreat network.
Integrated sober housing. PHP clients have direct access to the Roots & Summit Program for structured sober living, with free daily transportation to and from outpatient programming.
Person-centered, individualized care. Our team uses your progress, not your diagnosis, as the measure of success. We begin with a comprehensive assessment by a licensed clinician, then develop an individualized recovery plan built around your history, your strengths, and your goals.
The 60 + 60 treatment guarantee. After completing 60 consecutive days of treatment at Discovery Point Retreat, if you experience a relapse, you can return for an additional 60 consecutive days of treatment at no additional cost. Terms apply and results vary. Learn more on our treatment guarantee page.
Compassionate clinicians. Our behavioral health team brings deep clinical experience, trauma-informed training, and a person-first philosophy to every interaction. Many of our staff have personal lived experience with recovery and bring that perspective to their work.
Are PHPs for Addiction Covered by Insurance?
Yes, PHP treatment for addiction is often covered by insurance, including many private health plans, as long as it is considered medically necessary. Coverage typically includes therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, and other structured clinical services provided as part of the program. However, benefits can vary depending on the specific insurance plan, network providers, and prior authorization requirements.
Public insurance programs like Medicaid and Medicare also often provide coverage for PHP addiction treatment. Medicaid coverage varies by state, but many state Medicaid programs in Texas and across the U.S. include behavioral health and substance use disorder services, including PHP when appropriate. Medicare may also cover PHP services under its outpatient mental health benefits when the treatment is deemed medically necessary and provided by a Medicare-approved facility.
How Much Does A PHP Program Cost?
The cost of PHP varies depending on length of stay and individual needs, but can range from $400-500 per day of treatment. That said, they are a less costly alternative to residential inpatient programs since they don’t usually involve additional room and board fees. The good news is that Discovery Point Retreat rehab accepts insurance and is committed to making our partial hospitalization program affordable for people in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Free Transportation and Sober Living for PHP Clients
Two of the most common barriers to consistent PHP attendance are transportation and stable sober housing. Discovery Point Retreat removes both.
Sober Living through the Roots & Summit Program. PHP clients who do not have a stable, substance-free home environment can move into one of six sober living homes operated by Discovery Point Retreat in the Dallas area. The Roots & Summit Program offers men’s, women’s, and co-ed homes, with placement determined collaboratively with your admissions team based on what best supports your recovery. Learn more on our sober living page.
Free daily transportation. Every Roots & Summit Program resident receives free daily transportation to and from Discovery Point Retreat’s Dallas outpatient center. The transport schedule is built around PHP session times. You do not need a car, transit pass, or personal driver to attend treatment consistently.
On-site chef meals during programming hours. Discovery Point Retreat’s on-site chef supports balanced nutrition with dietary accommodations available on request, including gluten-free, lactose-free, allergy-aware, and personal preferences. Learn more on our on-site chef page.
These structural supports are part of why our PHP produces strong attendance and engagement. When the practical barriers are handled, you can focus on the work of recovery. Call (855) 245-4127 to talk through PHP, the Roots & Summit Program, and how to get started.
Is the Partial Hospitalization Program Right for Me?
At Discovery Point Retreat, we understand that addiction recovery treatment isn’t “one size fits all.” Our team of knowledgeable and experienced behavioral health specialists can help you determine the proper course of care for your unique situation.
Our PHP in Dallas is designed to extend the support and guidance of inpatient treatment while allowing you to return home, or to one of our Roots & Summit Program sober living homes, each evening. This level of care relies on your ability to remain focused on recovery and maintain sobriety outside of session hours. External support systems matter, especially in early recovery. If you do not have a stable, substance-free home environment, the Roots & Summit Program is built to provide one.
What Comes After Partial Hospitalization Rehab?
After completing PHP at Discovery Point Retreat, your clinical team will work directly with you to step down to the next appropriate level of care. For most clients, that means transitioning into our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), with fewer programming hours per week, greater independence, and continued clinical support. Many clients also continue in the Roots & Summit Program sober living homes during this stepdown, maintaining the structure and accountability that supported PHP success.
Beyond IOP, your aftercare plan can include continued individual therapy, alumni programming, and connection to the Discovery Point Retreat alumni network for ongoing peer support. The tools you build in PHP, combined with continued accountability, give you the foundation to handle each new phase of your recovery with confidence.
Can I Work or Go to School During PHP Treatment?
Most clients are not able to work or attend school full-time during a Partial Hospitalization Program. PHP is a highly structured, full-day level of care, typically six hours per day, five days per week, which is closer to a full-time work schedule than a part-time commitment. Most clients take a temporary leave from work or school during PHP and return to those responsibilities once they step down to IOP.
For clients who work nontraditional hours or who need to maintain certain responsibilities during PHP, your admissions counselor can talk through scheduling options and what is realistic given your situation. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protects job security during eligible medical treatment for many employees, and your admissions counselor can help you understand whether FMLA applies in your case. For clients in the Roots & Summit Program sober living homes, free daily transportation removes one of the biggest scheduling obstacles, making it easier to balance treatment with other responsibilities once you step down to IOP.
Full engagement in PHP produces the best outcomes. Discovery Point Retreat’s clinical and admissions team will help you plan the leave, the support structures, and the return-to-life path that gives you the best chance at lasting recovery.
