What therapies and modalities do you use during treatment?

At Discovery Point Retreat, our treatment programs are tailored to your individual needs. After a comprehensive evaluation to determine the severity of your addiction and to assess your physical and mental health, our clinical team develops a personalized treatment plan that draws from a wide range of evidence-based and holistic therapies. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we curate a specific blend of modalities designed to address the root causes of your addiction and help you build a foundation for lasting recovery.

Your personalized treatment plan is a dynamic, evolving roadmap, not a static document. It will be continuously reviewed and adjusted by your treatment team based on your progress and changing needs. The table below provides an overview of the full range of therapies available in our programs, organized by category.

Core Clinical Therapies: The Foundation of Your Recovery

The clinical core of our program is built on three foundational therapeutic formats that work together to address your addiction from every angle. Individual therapy — one-on-one sessions with your primary therapist — is the cornerstone of your treatment. It is a safe, confidential space to delve into the personal issues that you may not be comfortable sharing in a group setting. You will work with your therapist to identify the root causes of your addiction, process trauma, and develop your personalized recovery plan.

Group therapy provides a powerful opportunity to connect with peers who understand what you are going through. Facilitated by a licensed therapist, group therapy helps you break through feelings of isolation, practice new communication skills, and gain valuable perspective from others on the same journey. Finally, family therapy is designed to heal the entire family system. In these sessions, you and your loved ones will learn about the disease of addiction, improve communication, and begin to rebuild trust in a safe, therapeutically guided environment.

Evidence-Based Behavioral Therapies

We utilize a range of specific, evidence-based behavioral therapies that have been proven effective in treating addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most well-researched therapies for addiction. Based on the principle that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, CBT helps you identify the negative thought patterns and core beliefs that lead to substance use and replace them with healthier, more adaptive ones.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is particularly effective for individuals who struggle with intense emotions and impulsivity. It teaches practical skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness — all essential for managing cravings and navigating early recovery. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) focuses on identifying and disputing the irrational beliefs that contribute to emotional distress and substance use, empowering you to take control of your emotional responses. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) teaches you to accept difficult thoughts and feelings without judgment and commit to action aligned with your personal values — a powerful approach for building psychological flexibility and a life of purpose.

Trauma Therapy: Healing the Root Cause

Unresolved trauma is a primary driver of addiction for many people. A history of abuse, neglect, loss, or other traumatic experiences can create deep psychological wounds that substance use is often used to numb. At Discovery Point Retreat, our clinical team is trained in trauma-informed approaches that help you process traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment. We understand that healing from trauma is often the key to unlocking lasting recovery, and we approach this work with the utmost care, compassion, and clinical expertise.

Holistic and Experiential Therapies: Healing the Whole Person

We believe that recovery involves more than just talk therapy. Our holistic and experiential therapies are designed to heal the mind, body, and spirit, helping you reconnect with yourself and discover a passion for life without substances.

Our music and art therapy provides a powerful outlet for those who struggle to express themselves verbally, allowing you to process emotions and explore your inner world in a non-threatening way. Recreational therapy helps you rediscover healthy leisure skills and learn how to enjoy life without drugs or alcohol through activities like sports, yoga, and outdoor experiences. Finally, our nutrition and wellness program addresses the physical toll of chronic substance use, teaching you how to use diet and fitness to support your mental and physical health in recovery.

Your Path, Your Plan

This extensive list of therapies is not meant to be overwhelming. You will not be participating in every single one. Upon admission to any of our three Texas locations in Waxahachie, Ennis, or Dallas, you will undergo a comprehensive assessment. Based on that assessment, our clinical team will craft a personalized treatment plan that includes the specific blend of therapies and modalities that are best suited to your unique needs, goals, and personality. This is your recovery journey, and every element of your treatment plan is chosen with your long-term success in mind.
