What is a Substance Use Assessment?

A substance use assessment is a way to figure out if you or someone you love might have a problem with drugs or alcohol and what kind of help could be most effective. It is a structured process designed to identify patterns of substance use, the severity of any potential addiction, and how it may be affecting health, relationships, work, or daily life. The assessment often begins with self-reflection questions or guided interviews to help recognize warning signs and understand the impact of substance use on overall wellbeing.

This process is valuable whether you are questioning your own use or noticing concerning behavior in a loved one. It looks at factors such as how often substances are used, whether there have been failed attempts to cut down, and whether use has caused negative consequences in personal, professional, or social areas.

What Questions Are in This Addiction Quiz?

The addiction quiz consists of 10 yes or no questions to gauge addiction severity. It should not be used to diagnose. Questions include:

  • Have you used any substances other than those PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR?
  • Do you use more than one substance at a time?
  • Do you have difficulty stopping use of substances when you want to?
  • Do you ever feel bad or guilty about your substance use?
  • Have you ever experienced withdrawal symptoms (felt physically ill, shakes, depression, increased anxiety, sleep problems, etc.) when you stopped using substances?

Is the Substance Use Assessment Free & Confidential?

Yes, this substance use assessment is free and confidential, and many online or initial screenings do not require any personal data to provide results. These assessments are designed to help you or someone you love evaluate potential substance use concerns without sharing identifying information. This makes it safe to answer honestly and receive an initial understanding of whether professional treatment may be needed.

What Will the Assessment Results Tell Me?

The results of a substance use assessment can provide a general indication of your risk level, showing whether you or someone you love may have a low, moderate, or substantial likelihood of a substance use issue. These results are based on patterns of behavior, frequency of use, and the impact on daily life, but they should not be used as a formal diagnosis.

Instead, the assessment is a tool to help you understand potential warning signs and determine whether a professional evaluation or treatment program may be appropriate. It highlights areas that may need attention, such as difficulties controlling use, withdrawal symptoms, or negative consequences in work, relationships, or health. By offering insight rather than a definitive yes-or-no answer, the assessment encourages informed decisions and helps guide the next steps toward recovery or professional support.
