At Discovery Point Retreat, our addiction treatment programs and services are not defined by a number of days, but rather by your individual needs. Our phased, evidence-based approach allows you to advance through the continuum of care at a pace based on your specific situation and the achievement of clinical milestones. While many people associate rehab with fixed-length programs like ’30-day rehab’ or ’90-day rehab,’ our philosophy is fundamentally different. We believe that true, sustainable recovery is a personal journey that cannot be confined to a predetermined timeline.
This individualized, milestone-based approach is a core differentiator of our program. It ensures that you receive the precise level of support you need for as long as you need it, without being prematurely discharged or held in a level of care longer than is clinically necessary. Your length of stay is determined by your progress, not by a calendar.
| Level of Care | Typical Duration | Clinical Milestones for Completion |
| Medical Detox | 5–10 days | Physical stabilization, safe management of withdrawal symptoms, medical clearance to begin therapy |
| Residential Treatment | 30–90 days | Consistent engagement in therapy, development of foundational coping skills, ability to identify triggers, stable mental and emotional state |
| Partial Hospitalization (PHP) | 2–4 weeks | Successful application of coping skills in a real-world environment, consistent attendance and participation, development of a sober support network |
| Intensive Outpatient (IOP) | 8–12 weeks | Maintained sobriety while managing work/school/family life, demonstrated ability to use support systems, creation of a comprehensive aftercare plan |
Why We Focus on Milestones, Not Days
Addiction is a complex disease that affects every person differently. The type of substance used, the duration and severity of the addiction, the presence of co-occurring mental health disorders, and an individual’s unique life circumstances all play a role in the recovery process. A one-size-fits-all, 30-day program simply cannot account for this level of complexity. Our clinical team rejected this outdated model in favor of a more effective, individualized approach.
Instead of counting days, we focus on helping you achieve a series of key clinical milestones — measurable indicators of progress that show you are developing the skills, insights, and stability needed for long-term sobriety. This approach is patient-centered, clinically driven, flexible and adaptive, and focused entirely on long-term outcomes rather than getting you out the door on a predetermined date.
Typical Timelines: What to Expect at Each Level of Care
While your personal journey will be unique, it can be helpful to have a general understanding of the typical time commitment for each level of care in our continuum. The table below provides a general framework. It is important to remember that these are averages, not guarantees. Your actual length of stay at each level will be determined by your clinical progress and the milestones you achieve.
The Initial Phase: Medical Detox (5–10 Days)
The first step for most clients is medical detox. The primary goal of this phase is to achieve physical stability. The length of detox is determined by the specific substance used, the severity of the physical dependence, and your overall health. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines may require a longer and more intensive medical protocol than withdrawal from other substances. You will be ready to move on from detox when our medical team has determined that your withdrawal symptoms are safely managed and you are physically and mentally stable enough to fully participate in the therapeutic process that follows.
Building the Foundation: Residential Treatment (30–90 Days)
Residential treatment is where the deep therapeutic work begins. While the most common length of stay is 30 days, many clients benefit from a longer 60 or 90-day program, particularly those with a long history of addiction or significant co-occurring disorders. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has shown that longer treatment durations are associated with better long-term outcomes. In this phase, you will work toward milestones like developing a strong therapeutic alliance with your therapist, identifying the root causes of your addiction, learning and implementing new coping skills, and demonstrating consistent emotional regulation in a structured environment.
Real-World Application: PHP and IOP (Several Weeks to Months)
As you step down to our outpatient programs, the focus shifts from stabilization to integration. The length of stay in PHP and IOP is highly variable and determined by your clinical progress. In PHP, you will work on applying your new skills while living at home or in a sober living environment, with milestones including consistent attendance, active participation in group therapy, and the ability to navigate daily stressors without relapsing. In IOP, you will continue to hone these skills while fully re-engaging with your work, school, and family life. Completion of IOP is based on milestones like maintaining sobriety over a sustained period, building a strong sober support network, and having a detailed, actionable aftercare plan in place.
Your Recovery, Your Pace
The most important thing to remember is that there is no ‘right’ amount of time to be in treatment. The only right answer is the amount of time it takes for you to build a solid foundation for a lifetime of recovery. Rushing the process is often a recipe for relapse. At Discovery Point Retreat, we are committed to giving you the time you need to heal, grow, and rediscover yourself. We will walk alongside you on this journey, for as long as it takes, at our three Texas locations in Waxahachie, Ennis, and Dallas.
