Does Discovery Point use a 12-step program?

Yes, we provide an optional 12-Step program as one of our core treatment modalities. At Discovery Point Retreat, we believe in a holistic, evidence-based approach to recovery that honors the individual needs of each person who walks through our doors. We combine the proven clinical effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with the spiritual elements and peer support structure of the 12-Step program to help you achieve and maintain long-term sobriety. During your addiction treatment, you will have the opportunity to learn the guiding principles of the 12-Step program alongside other individuals receiving treatment in a supportive, structured environment.

Our Philosophy: Integrating Evidence-Based Therapy with 12-Step Principles

Our treatment philosophy is rooted in the understanding that addiction is a complex disease affecting the mind, body, and spirit. Lasting recovery requires more than just abstinence; it requires a fundamental shift in thinking, behavior, and spiritual well-being. This is why we don’t rely on a single methodology. Instead, we integrate the introspective, action-oriented framework of the 12 Steps with premier clinical therapies like CBT.

This integrated model, often referred to as 12-Step Facilitation (TSF), is an evidence-based practice in its own right. Research has consistently shown that combining these approaches can lead to better outcomes. A landmark 2020 Cochrane review of 27 different studies involving over 10,000 participants found that 12-Step Facilitation programs led to higher rates of continuous abstinence at 12, 24, and 36 months compared to other established treatments. By participating in our optional 12-Step track, you receive the best of both worlds: the structured, psychological tools of CBT to manage cravings and triggers, and the profound peer support and spiritual guidance of the 12-Step fellowship.

Treatment Modality How 12-Step Principles Are Integrated
Individual Therapy Your primary therapist works with you one-on-one to apply the 12 Steps to your personal history and recovery goals, including working through the moral inventory of Step Four in a private, confidential setting.
Group Therapy Dedicated 12-Step group sessions allow you and your peers to work through the Steps together, share experiences, and provide mutual support — fostering the fellowship central to the 12-Step model.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) CBT sessions identify and change negative thought patterns that fuel addiction. These clinical skills are directly connected to 12-Step principles, such as using CBT techniques to take a more effective personal inventory (Step 10).
Family Therapy Family sessions educate loved ones on the disease of addiction and the 12-Step recovery process, enabling them to become a more effective part of your long-term support network.
Aftercare Planning From day one, we help you build a sustainable aftercare plan that includes identifying local AA or NA meetings, securing a sponsor, and establishing a routine of meeting attendance to support your sobriety after discharge.

How Is the 12-Step Program Integrated into Treatment at Discovery Point Retreat?

At Discovery Point Retreat, the 12-Step program is not a separate, isolated track — it is woven into the fabric of our daily treatment schedule. For clients who choose this path, the principles of the 12 Steps are introduced and explored across a variety of settings, from individual therapy sessions to group process meetings. This approach allows you to build a strong foundation in the 12-Step philosophy while simultaneously engaging in other critical evidence-based therapies. The table below outlines how we integrate the 12-Step program with our core clinical services to create a comprehensive, holistic treatment experience.

Why Is an Optional 12-Step Program Beneficial?

Making the 12-Step program optional is a deliberate and client-centered choice. We recognize that the spiritual language of the 12 Steps, while deeply meaningful for many, may not resonate with everyone. Requiring a single philosophy of all clients can be counterproductive and may create a barrier to treatment for those who are not comfortable with its spiritual underpinnings. By offering the 12-Step program as a voluntary and integrated modality, we empower you to choose the path that feels most authentic and effective for your personal recovery journey.

This approach allows us to serve a broader range of individuals — including those who prefer a purely secular, science-based recovery program, as well as those who are seeking a strong spiritual foundation. For those who do opt in, the 12-Step program provides a powerful, time-tested framework for building a life free from addiction. It offers a sense of community, a structured guide for personal growth, and a clear path for maintaining sobriety long after formal treatment has ended.

What Are the 12 Steps?

The 12 Steps are a set of guiding principles that outline a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Originally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), the 12 Steps have since been adapted for a wide range of substance use and behavioral addictions. The steps progress from an admission of powerlessness over addiction, through a process of moral inventory, making amends, and spiritual growth, to a commitment to carry the message of recovery to others. Together, they form a comprehensive framework for personal transformation that addresses the psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of addiction — dimensions that clinical therapy alone may not fully reach.

At Discovery Point Retreat, our clinicians are trained to introduce and explore these steps in a way that is accessible and meaningful to each individual client, regardless of their religious background or prior experience with the 12-Step community.
