Do I have to detox before starting the next phase of treatment?

While most of our clients at Discovery Point Retreat find it beneficial to undergo medically assisted detox before beginning the next phase, we understand that every individual is different. The simple answer is: not necessarily. The decision is not a blanket policy, but a clinical one, made on a case-by-case basis after a thorough assessment by our medical and clinical team. We are happy to work with you to create the best possible treatment plan for you.

Our primary commitment is to your safety and to creating a treatment plan that provides the best possible foundation for long-term recovery. For many individuals — particularly those with a physical dependence on substances like alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines — attempting to engage in intensive therapeutic work without first completing detox is not only ineffective, it can be dangerous. However, for others, such as those with a primary addiction to substances with less severe physical withdrawal syndromes, direct admission to a residential or outpatient program may be appropriate.

Substance Category Is Medical Detox Typically Required? Rationale
Alcohol Yes, almost always Alcohol withdrawal can cause life-threatening seizures and delirium tremens. Medical supervision is essential for safety.
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin) Yes, almost always Similar to alcohol, benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause life-threatening seizures. A slow, medically supervised taper is required.
Opioids (Heroin, Fentanyl, Prescription Painkillers) Yes, highly recommended While not typically life-threatening, opioid withdrawal is intensely uncomfortable and creates a very high risk of relapse without medical management.
Stimulants (Cocaine, Methamphetamine) Often, but not always Stimulant withdrawal is primarily psychological (depression, anxiety, intense cravings). Detox provides a safe, supportive environment to manage these symptoms.
Marijuana Rarely Marijuana withdrawal is typically mild and does not require medical intervention. Direct admission to a therapeutic program is common.

The Clinical Assessment: Determining Your Need for Detox

Upon admission to Discovery Point Retreat, you will undergo a comprehensive evaluation with our clinical and medical team. This assessment is the critical first step that informs your entire treatment plan, including the need for detox. The factors we consider include the specific substance or substances used, since different substances have vastly different withdrawal profiles; the duration and frequency of use; your overall physical health, including any pre-existing medical conditions; the presence of any co-occurring mental health disorders; and your previous treatment history. If you have a history of difficult or complicated withdrawal experiences, medical detox is almost always recommended.

The table below outlines the general clinical guidelines for medical detox based on substance type. These are general guidelines only — your individual assessment will always be the determining factor.

Why Detox Is More Than Just Getting Clean

It is a common misconception that detox is simply about waiting for the drugs or alcohol to leave your system. At Discovery Point Retreat, medical detox is an active and therapeutic phase of treatment. The goal is not just to achieve physical sobriety, but to achieve a state of physical and mental stability that allows you to fully engage in the deep therapeutic work that follows.

During your time in our detox program, you will receive 24/7 medical supervision from our nursing staff, who will monitor your vital signs and withdrawal symptoms around the clock to ensure your safety and comfort. We may administer medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and prevent dangerous complications. You will also meet with a primary therapist to begin building a therapeutic alliance and start exploring the issues underlying your addiction. Our team will work with you to create a seamless transition from detox into our residential or outpatient programs.

Attempting to skip detox when it is clinically indicated is like trying to build a house on an unstable foundation. If you are physically uncomfortable, emotionally volatile, and battling intense cravings, you simply will not be able to absorb and implement the lessons of therapy. A safe, comfortable detox sets the stage for everything that follows.

Your Personalized Path Starts Here

Ultimately, the decision about whether you need to detox is a collaborative one, made between you and our expert clinical team. We will never place you into a level of care that is not appropriate for your individual needs. We will provide you with a clear, honest clinical recommendation based on our comprehensive assessment, and we will work with you to create a treatment plan that you feel confident in.

Whether your journey at Discovery Point Retreat begins in our medical detox program or directly in one of our residential or outpatient programs at our facilities in Waxahachie, Ennis, or Dallas, you can be assured that your treatment plan will be tailored entirely to you.
