Donavon Derusse, LMSW

Donavon Derusse is a therapist at Discovery Point Retreat. He holds a Master’s in Social Work- Direct Practice from the University of Texas at Arlington where he double majored in Military Science with Army ROTC and was commissioned as an Army Medical Service Corp 2nd Lieutenant. He held a dual career of Social Work and Army Medical Service Corp graduating with both an MSW and an Army Commission at UTA in 2010. From here Derusse worked as a case manager for the Texas Offenders Reentry Initiative at the The Potter’s House in South Dallas. Here he supported the non-profit’s mission to reduce the recidivism rate of clients that were in the wrap-around program. As a case manager he oversaw clinical groups and supported clients in recovery with AA/NA, anger management, parenting classes, employment assistance, and completing case management for the High Risk Population, gaining a passion for helping people improve their lives and future. Donavon also worked at Millwood in Arlington, an acute care facility offering co-occurring mental health and substance abuse treatment, and The Guidance Center of Fort Smith in Arkansas. He also gained four years of clinical experience working with the Community Mental Health Clinic working with court referred cases with a good level of success in supporting reintegration. His military career was largely spent as a Army Medical Service Corp Officer stationed at Seagoville and Camp Robinson working with patients from active war zones taking on the full accountability of reporting wartime casualties in the battlefield. Donavon is currently enlisted and participates in annual training and evaluations before refocusing back to social work.

At Discovery Point Retreat, Donavon works with our clients to help process the underlying trauma at the root of substance abuse. His experience working with people across a variety of backgrounds helps him connect with clients on a personal level, creating a safe, judgement-free space focused on healing.
